CHAPTER ONE!(:
~*~*~*~*~
Scarlet walked down the crowded street, kicking stones and watching the water in the drains sink lower and lower. Her gentle auburn hair tied in a bun behind her head. She watched the signs change, and the taxi's rush by in a blur. “Hey!” someone yelled behind her. She spun on a dime, catching herself off-guard. “Yes?” she replied in her dull sing-song voice. “Wait up, would ya?” John stopped to catch his breath, putting his hands on his knees; bent over. “John?” she asked, surprised. “Did you follow me all the way here?” she looked around. “Yeah,” he huffed. “I've been running behind you for the past block or so” “Are you alright?” she laughed slightly. John's blonde hair was messed up and windblown, his brown eyes were wide. He looked childish looking up at her from his bent position when in reality he was the taller one. “What the hell are you thinking?” He stood up straight, looking down at her. “I don't want to be here anymore, John. I want to see the world!” she opened her arms and spun around once. He grabbed her shoulders. “You can't just leave home like that, what about your mom? And Jared?” “Jared can go die in a hole, and as for my mom what has she ever really done for me? She keeps secrets from me all the time, John” she stated. “Just go home, please?” he half begged. “I don't want to go home” she said stubbornly. “Then at least come stay at my house with me till you want to go home” he said, rubbing his hands over her shoulders gently. “John—” she started. “No buts, it's either my house or yours” he interrupted. “Yours” she pulled her backpack straps tighter. “Hand it over” he held out his hand for the bag. “John—” she tried again. “Give it” he said, with a little more force this time. “Alright” she handed him her bag, and put her hands in her pockets. She started to walk after him, following in his footsteps. He turned back every so often, to make sure she hadn't turned and ran away from him. They finally reached his front porch when he turned to face her. He glared down at her, a look she'd seen on the father figures in movies and on TV shows. He ran a hand over his eyes and down his nose, leaving his palm pressed over his mouth before he spoke softly. “Go call your mom” “No” she shook her head. “Go call your mother, Annabelle.” he said, his voice sounded more like a parent than a friend. “I don't want to” she murmured, shying away from his authorative tone. “Then I'll do it for you.” he threatened. “Why are you taking this so...seriously?” she hesitated. “Go call your mom” he said again. “I don't want to call my mother” she protested. | “Scarlet, darling, is that you?” John's family au pair opened the door.
“Hello Samantha” Scarlet murmured in a small voice. “Come on” John took her by the hand and dragged her inside. He pulled her up the stairs, and opened the door to his room; which was in the attic. The roof tilted on an angle, and his bed was placed conveniently in the corner of the room; his desk on the opposite side of the room along with his bookshelves. There was a couch by his bed, and a coffee table in front of it. His TV was far too big for his room, and there were speakers placed on the sides of it with movies stacked in a cupboard attached to it. “John, what's the matter?” she sat down on the couch by his bed, watching as he sat in the computer chair between his shelf and his desk. “For me?” he interrupted. “Where's the house phone?” she got off his lap and looked around for their phone. “There's one on the table next to my bed” he pointed. “Mom?” She whispered into the phone. “Oh my god! Anna?! Where are you?!” her mother yelled into the phone, practically screaming. “I'm at a friend’s, mom. I'm fine. I'm staying at their house for maybe a couple days, leave me be alright? I'll be home as soon as I want to come home...” Scarlet hesitated. ` “I'm coming to get you, tell me where you are!” she yelled. “No, mom. I'm staying at my friend's house...I'll be home in a couple days, I promise” she hung up the phone, and placed it back on the table before flopping down onto John's bed. “Why don't you want to go home? You never told me” John got onto the bed next to her, putting his hands behind his head. “I'm tired of Jared bossing me around, and hitting me...” she curled against John's side, putting her head on his chest. “He hits you?” he looked down at her with a surprised expression. “Yes...” she murmured, hiding her face in John's chest. “Why do you let him?” John took a single hand from behind his head to wrap it around Scarlet's shoulders. “I don't have a choice...” she sighed. “Isn't he moving in today?” he asked. He took one look at her and understood. “Oh...is that why you—?” She nodded, tears forming beneath her eyelids. “I just don't want to go back” “You can stay here, my parents aren't coming back for a while, you'll be in the clear if you stay” “I can stay here? And you won't make me go home?” she looked up at him. "I won't make you go home” he nodded. “Thanks John” her eyes started to close. “Hey, Annie? Get up” John shook his sleeping best friend. “I'm up” she groaned. “Your mom is coming over to see if you're here...do you want to leave the house?” John asked. “I'll come back later” she got off his bed and headed for the back door. |
